Missional Communities
What are Missional Communities?Jesus commands His followers to make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:18–20). That kind of formation doesn’t happen in isolation or in large gatherings alone. It requires a smaller, consistent community—like the twelve—where life is shared and discipleship is practiced.
This is why we have Missional Communities. At New City, they are an essential part of how we make disciples. Our MCs are small groups that gather in homes throughout the city to share life and follow Jesus together in everyday rhythms. They foster growth in knowledge of, love for, and obedience to Jesus through close relationships and formative practices.
What should I expect?When you show up, you can expect a shared meal, prayer, and a Bible-centered discussion. These conversations are not lectures. They are shaped by the gospel, honesty, and real-life application as people learn to follow Jesus together.
MCs gather regularly and also spend time together outside the home in the community, and each group decides their particular meeting schedule (see individual groups below for details).
MCs are open to anyone, including those exploring faith. There is no pressure when you first come. You can simply show up, observe, and take your time getting to know people.
Most MCs include kids in their gathering in some way, and many hire a babysitter for the discussion portion of the night. Check with the MC leaders for details about how they accommodate children.
At the heart of every Missional Community is a shared identity. We are learning to live as:

Our earthly families are formed by shared ancestry, but God’s family is formed by grace. It is a family of the forgiven, brought together through the blood of Jesus. Because of this, people from every walk of life are united as one (Eph 2:19; Gal 6:10; 1 Tim 3:15).
Our Missional Community family gatherings are the primary place we live out our identity as a family together. In these gatherings, we fellowship, eat, pray, share our stories, and learn together. However, being family isn't just coming together for one night. It's also going through life’s normal rhythms with one another—ballgames, birthdays, and meals, to name a few.

As disciples of Jesus, we share the good news of his life, death, and resurrection with those around us. Our missional identity is not based on location alone. We are missionaries wherever we go—disciples of Jesus making disciples of Jesus (Matt 28:18-20; 2 Cor 5:18-20).
We live out this identity in our MCs by encouraging one another in the gospel, praying for people in our lives who are far from Christ, and creatively imagining ways to invite others into God’s family together.

We love and serve others because Jesus has loved and served us (John 13:12-15; Phil 2:5-7).
In our Missional Communities, we use our gifts and resources to meet one another’s needs, as we also work together to meet the needs of our neighbors and community.
